R Ramani Ramalingam

R Ramani Ramalingam graduated with a law degree from London with honours in 1994 and was admitted as an advocate & solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in April 1997.

After years of experience in intellectual property law, he helmed various companies such as Public Performance Malaysia Sdn Bhd (‘PPM’), the Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (‘RIM’) and the now-discontinued Music Rights Malaysia Bhd (MRM) leading the Malaysian recording industry priorities in areas such as legislative lobbying, civil and criminal copyright enforcement against music piracy and collective music licensing. Currently, his legal practice focuses on intellectual property advisory and contractual matters for clients in industries such as software and entertainment.

Amongst other interests, he mentors start-ups with high growth and technological potential working alongside one of Malaysia’s foremost angel investment firms (‘Nexea’). He also serves on the Board of Trustees of Yayasan KRU, a non-profit organisation aiming to support youth from B40 families to pursue skills-based tertiary education programs related to the creative industry and digital entrepreneurship.

  • Chief Executive Officer of Public Performance Malaysia Sdn Bhd (‘PPM’) - revenue grew from RM8 million per annum to RM53 million per annum during tenure.
  • Chief Executive Officer of Music Rights Malaysia Bhd (MRM) - achieving close to RM100 million in collective public performance and broadcast music licensing revenue with operating costs at 5% during its first full operational year (2018).
  • Advised the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (‘IFPI’) in lobbying, licensing and anti-piracy enforcement matters.
  • Consultant for a global intellectual property organisation as a subject matter expert regarding a copyright related project for the South East Asian region.
